  • Swine Flu Myth: Is Pork Safe To Eat?

Posted on May 8th, 2009 Editor More Than 14 Days

Many are threatened about the swine flu virus and limited themselves from eating pork. However, Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald of New South Wales, Australia, has assured consumers that it is safe to eat pork because swine flu is not transferable from eating pork products.

According to Mr. Macdonald, Swine influenza is a type of virus that can only be transferred thru human contact and not by food. Thus, the risk of acquiring swine influenza from eating pork is low. He also supports the statement by Australian Pork Limited (APL) that all pig products sold in Australia (including pork, ham and sausages) are grown locally, thus consumers can have utmost confidence in Australia’s pork.

Dr. Lisa Szabo, the chief scientist of NSW Food Authority said that the now known virus is not transmissible to those who eat pork products that are properly processed and handled. She further said that the swine influenza virus could be killed at the temperature of 70°C.

The World Health Organisation(WHO) senior scientist of food safety, Dr Peter Ben Embarek in his latest release statement said that there is no reason to be afraid of eating pork because you don’t get swine flu from eating pork or pork related products.

With the advice from World Health Organization (WHO) and Dr. Szabo, Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald concluded that eating pork is safe.
