Posted on May 9th, 2009 Editor More Than 14 Days

Guess what LaVarien Grundy gave his mother for Mother’s Day? His kidney. The transplant took place at the Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville this week. It sure is a gift of a lifetime…

LaVarien Grundy said that, when he first knew that her mother had to go for dialysis, he immediately checks out whether he could donate his kidney to her. His mother, Janice Smith, refused at first, but he convinced her and she gave in.  Janice said that kidney disease runs in her family and her condition was deteriorating fast.  But thanks to her son, her future looks brighter now.

There are 80,000 people across the country currently waiting for a kidney transplant. About 1800 are from Nashville itself, making Janice one of the few fortunate one.

Both mother and son are recuperating at the Vanderbilt Medical Center. If all goes well they should be discharged after 6 to 8 weeks. Even though Janice will not be able to celebrate this Mother’s Day, it’s definitely a day she’ll never forget. She can now think of her future thanks to her son’s generosity.

Janice can now looks forward to getting her life back, to be able to travel with her husband and family and do her daily activities. She looks forward to this second chance… a new beginning. As for LaVarien, he feels it’s a huge gift, but he believe that most people would do the same as him for their loved ones.
