Insurance costs have run higher than income, probing more people to be reluctant towards Health Insurance
Posted on March 26th, 2009 More Than 14 DaysCongress has been inactive regarding healthcare since 1994 till Obama took the case of health reform with the body. Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) gives a strong review of the debilitating occurrence in the interim period.
- Almost 9 million Americans hold no insurance.
- Additionally, there are almost six million non-Americans without insurance in USA.
- Nationally, average monthly incomes have been outpaced by average health insurance premium at eight times more pace.
- There has been decrease in insurance of young people, down six percent to 67% currently.
In the past 15 years, there has been an overweight of expenses while income has been stagnant. This has led to considerable reduction in private health insurance. The US censor Bureau provided figures from 1994-95 and 2005-06 for the research comparisons. It highlights:
- More Americans are uninsured. Nationwide, the total number of uninsured has increase to 45.7 million - a growth of almost 9 millions. There has been 3 percent growth in category of uninsured men from 19 to 22. In women, the percentage has escalated from 16 to 18.
- Even in working sector, there have been more people without insurance. The number has grown by 6 million to 26.9 million. At present, 18% of total adult workers are not insured.
- But contrarily to the general activity, more children are getting covered. There has been a 13 percent fall in uninsured kids, the number standing at 9.2 million. Thanks to Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), who been active in insuring kids.
- More people have not been carrying insurance. Young people who have private health insurance have fallen from 73% to 67%, a 6% downfall. The percentage has been fallen as much as 10% in Alaska, North Carolina, Utah, Vermont, and Virginia.
- Insurance premiums have grown by quite a margin and the worker’s incomes seem dwarfed in comparison. Private insurance plans have increased the costs by 61% on an average. The data shows it rising from $2,560 in 1996 to $4,118 in 2006. Nationally, employees are paying more to get insurance cover; almost in the range of 79% for individual policy while wage only rise by 10%.

We cannot have national health care without taking it out of the hands of the insurance companies. They were actually a part of the Ponzi Scheme that crashed our economy, taking premiums and investing in the Stock Market. They have forgotten their true purpose of spreading risk throughout their polocyholders and have instead persued obscene profits. Think of how much leverage the government could use to bring prices down if we had National Health Care like everyone else has.

Both my sons are hard working young men, ages 26 and 24. It breaks my heart that neither can afford health insurance. The 26 year old has had a heart attack in the past and needs follow up work done (stress test etc) but cannot afford to do so.
The 24 year old is BiPolar and his medication cost $300 per month. (uninsured price of course) His wonderful doctor tries hard to supply him with samples but we live in fear that one day, he won’t have any to give.
Our doctor says there are no generics that would work for my son.
So here we are, a family of working Americans living in fear of what may happen to our loved ones.
Did I mention that none of us can afford to pay for tests and $300 prescriptions?
We’re not alone.
