FDA Finally Approves The Use Of Plan B Morning-After Contraceptive Pill To 17 Years Olds
Posted on April 28th, 2009 More Than 14 DaysA contraceptive pill called the Plan B “morning after”, which was being prohibited for use by girls below 18 years old has now finally approved by the FDA for purchase by 17 years old teenage who wishes to buy over the counter. The plan B pill is known to be effective in preventing pregnancy if taken within 72 hours after unsafe sex. Before, only 18 years old and above women with ID and below 18 with prescription are allowed to buy Plan B over the counter.
FDA stated that they won’t appeal to a judge’s decision, which instructed them to make an emergency contraception for 17 years olds, they have also said that the said contraceptive will still not become available to seventeeners until its manufacturer has changed its label, has submitted and approved by the FDA.
With this announcement, women’s health activist were cheered, because amongst developed countries, the United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate, and giving the teens an access to birth control especially the emergency birth control helps them to make responsible decision and eventually avoid unwanted pregnancy.
The other orders of the judge is to let youngster below seventeen to buy plan B over the counter, but FDA still has no words as to when they will comply with this order. FDA representative George Strait said that they are not aware of the new request from manufacturer. TEVA pharmaceuticals on the other hand did not comment whether it will submit application for the use of Plan B in girls under 17.
