  • Leukemia may be diagnosed as early as 6 years before CLL through blood tests

The New England Journal of Medicine, in its latest article, has come with a revelation which suggests that there may be uncanny white blood cells (WBC) in a body even before the person is inflicted with lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). This is significant as it opens up new channels into knowing better as to what the disease resembles in initial stages. B-cell clones were analyzed under a special method by Dr. Albitar and Ms. Ma. An identical method might be chosen by Quest Diagnostics to detect the potential CLL candidates in future.

A very gradual process, the blood cancer CLL may breed through an erratic number of WBC, termed B-cells in the bone marrow and blood in a space of years. It may also take the lymph nodes, spleen, and other organs under effect. CLL is an unknown territory in the manner of its development, even though the disease itself is pretty common.

The NCI/FDA group, whose prior analyses have marked that a few families of the CLL sufferers may be carrying B-cells in the blood that resemble the CLL cells on the protein level at exterior surface. The uncommon trend, called monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis (MBL) is found in above 10 percent of CLL family members and the untouched people at about 3 to 5% in the age range of over 50, indicating this might eventually grow into CLL.

77, 000 volunteers were tested for the different forms of Cancer; Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO). 45 of them were found safe, only to be later found to have CLL, and their frozen blood samples provided during registration in PLCO, were shortlisted. Leaving one, the rest of the samples when checked with innovative machines at Quest Diagnostics were shockingly accredited to have MBL about 6 months to 6 years before the people actually suffered from CLL. The process of flow cytometry was handy in diagnosing that there was presence of particles resembling CLL markers: the cell surface proteins. Further, the restored genetic cells called immunoglobulin heavy variable (IGHV) group genes also inquired the lot of these samples. 41 out of 45 people were found carrying MBL.

About Quest Diagnostics and Blood-based Tumor Testing

Quest Diagnostics pioneers the non-intruding blood-based biomarker testing that the doctors employ in the diagnosis and surveillance of cancer and other maladies caused by tissues. The company owns a formula; the Leumeta(TM), which helps the doctors diagnose leukemia and cancer’s tumors’ genetic constituent in a painless method through blood plasma. The traditional biopsy of the removed bone marrow is highly excruciating.
