  • Diabetes And Obesity Could Be Control With Brown Fat

Posted on April 17th, 2009 Editor More Than 14 Days

According to a new research published on Thu, Apr 9, one day, good baby fat can prevent Obesity and type-2 diabetes. The Joslin Diabetes Center researchers tested 2,000 adult patients to look for brown fat. Before, it was being believed by experts that brown fat only exists in childhood. However, scientists found deposits in 7.5 percent to women and three percent to men who are in routine PET/CT scans.

Researchers further tests two patients that have pathology records indicating a presence of brown fat, and they found out that UCP-1- a heat-generating protein was present in both of them. Since scans may have the chance to overlook smaller brown fat particles, researchers believe that the results published in the New England Journal of Medicine could be an underestimate.

Ronald Khan, one of the researchers said that deposits were bigger in fatter patients, and suggests that brown fat growth has the ability to control weight and improve glucose metabolism. Researchers hope that this new research result will open up a new therapeutic area for obesity and type-2 diabetes by modifying brown fat activity.
