  • Exposure to Multiple CT Scans Increase Risk of Cancer

Posted on April 12th, 2009 Editor More Than 14 Days

Exposure to too many CT scans over a period can lead to risks of developing cancer which is confirmed by a recent study. Compare to the traditional X-rays, CT scan effects enormously on the health of a person due to its higher dose of radiation. This upcoming problem has shown anxiety about the future health of the social being.

This conclusion come out through efficient researches done at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston where numbers of CT scans are taken place for more than 31,400 patients. In the research, every patient had at least one exposure to CT radiation in the last 22 years. 1/3 of the patients had more than 5 CT scans and 1/20 of the patients had over 22 CT scans.

Result of the study shows that 15% of the patients had radiation exposure equivalent to one thousand time of tradition chest x-rays and 7% of the patients have gone through radiation exposure to the extent of having risks of cancer increase by 1%. Researchers say that although multiple CT scans only increase risk of cancer modestly, the result is clinically significant.

Despite the harmful effects of CT scan people are enforced to choose this remedy to diagnose their complicated health problems. For this reason, doctors and surgeons have to be alert while choosing this option for patients with previous CT scans history since the consequences are more recognized by them. Multiple CT scans will lead to a situation of collective risks to cancer, to avoid such situations doctors and pediatricians should recommend an alternative with reduced amount of radiations like MRI; which could help in the diagnosis of the disease.

My son has had 38 ct with and without contrast in the past 2 years. He had cancer last year in his appendix which was removed before we knew that there was cancer in it. Could this cancer been developed from the cts. Do you think that he could get more cancer… WORRIED MOM

Several years ago, I was suppose to take a
MRI scan, instead the technician decided to give me a CT scan. I was never advise of the
higher doses of radiation that I would be expose to. One week later a small lump developed in the exact area of the CT scan.
The lump has grown into a large mass.
I have been seen by several specialist, and they honestly state that they do no know what it is, but they know for sure it’s not NSF.
I went to Radiology to have an MRI done, and the doctors are still unsure.

Wow, the MRI cost a whopping $5500.! ….and they still can’t tell me what this large lump in my ( rib cage area ) is.
Has anyone heard of this condition.
